KETRON® PEEK-1000: Robust and resistant! |
| The French company FMB manufactures plastic parts for the automobile industry. It specializes in making bezels for the glass lenses of headlights for a number of different automobile brands. During the manufacturing of the bezels, plastic is injected directly onto the outer rim of the glass lens using an injection molding process. This requires the insertion of a plastic damping disk between the lens and the injection mold. |
Previously the disk was not always able to withstand the strain during the injection molding process and the glass lenses would often break (approximately 60% lens breakage).
The purchaser of the bezels is the Holophane company, the world’s leading manufacturer of headlights. Holophane had stipulated a maximum of 5% lens breakage during the injection process and tied the renewal of the supply contract with FMB to this stipulation. Consequently, another type of plastic for the damping disk was sought that could withstand pressures of up to 20 MPa yet still possess good impact resistance and be able to withstand temperatures of up to +300°C.
The first tests conducted by FMB using PTFE as a substitute did not yield the desired results. The durability of the damping disk did not exceed 30 minutes and around 40% of the lenses broke. That’s when FMB turned for help to Angst+Pfister, which ultimately suggested using KETRON® PEEK-1000 natural as the material for the disk. The results were convincing: the disk now has a service life of approximately two months, and less than 5% of the lenses break. FMB thus opted for this solution. The next goal is to prevent any lens breakage whatsoever.
KETRON® PEEK-1000 natural
KETRON® PEEK-1000 is produced from virgin polyetheretherketone resin and offers the greatest stiffness and impact strength of all KETRON® PEEK grades. Further advantages include: · high maximum allowable service temperature in air (+250°C for continuous long-term deployment and up to +310°C for short periods); · high mechanical strength, good stiffness and low creep, even at high temperatures; · excellent resistance to chemicals and hydrolysis.
Angst+Pfister has many different KETRON® PEEK-1000 stock shapes and sizes in its warehouse inventory. For more information please consult our Online Shop ASPOparts®.
