Angst+Pfister Newsletter no. 1 / 2008

Dear Readers,

Welcome to 2008! We are back this year with our customary verve and have an array of attractive offerings lined up for you. To begin with, we would like to direct your attention to the big Angst+Pfister contest. It pays to take part! Answer the three questions correctly for a chance to win one of four iPod Nano Green media players! Read on to learn more about our contest.

Our first Newsletter of the new year deals with sealing technology. Read interesting facts about our sealing technology product range including our innovative PTFE flat seals which, thanks to their high chemical and thermal resistance, superior sealing properties and good malleability, can be deployed in a wide variety of applications, particularly in the chemical, mechanical engineering and food-and-beverage sectors. In addition, in our “Sealing Technology in Action” feature column, we acquaint you with the Kinematika AG company. Kinematika AG is the leader in dispersing and mixing technology and relies on KALREZ® O-rings supplied by Angst+Pfister.

You will also find additional topics from the practical world of sealing technology in our Newsletter, which also provides details on the contents of the latest issue of the Angst+Pfister customer magazine.

We wish you interesting reading.

New in our Assortment: Sealing Technology
“Lollipops” with ground strips – a perfect symbiosis

Basic requirements in modern-day apparatus and mechanical engineering include mastering extreme temperature differences and achieving universal chemical resistance, especially at pipe and flange joints. The innovative PTFE flat seals from Angst + Pfister stand out for their high reliability and longevity.

And easy installation handling helps ensure permanent and consistent tightness in all operating conditions.

PTFE-coated flat seals are an ideal combination of elastic substrate materials and chemically resistant PTFE. Their permanent pretensioning enables a continuous sealing force to be maintained. A broad operating temperature range and universal chemical resistance are distinguishing features of these
seals. Typical application areas are general chemical apparatus and plant engineering, and piping and flange joints in the chemical industry, in mechanical engineering, as well as in the food-andbeverage
industry. The material pairing of elastic substrate and PTFE coating creates an excellent combination that stands out for the following properties:

- highly resistant to chemicals and heat;
- superior sealing ability (even under changing temperatures);
- highly adaptable and malleable;
- high rebound elasticity.

PTFE-coated seals are manufactured with a variety of different substrates and in various dimensions. The temperature of the medium to be sealed off and the available sealing force largely determine
the choice of the substrate material. All standard flange sizes can be produced.

NORMATEC® green O-ring

NORMATEC® FKM NT 80.7/70 green O-ring

As a leading O-ring supplier, we have repeatedly encountered customer demand for colored O-rings made from FKM. We have now addressed this circumstance by assembling a stocked range of green O-rings. Currently, around 200 different sizes are available from stock.

We intend to build out this product range continuously in accordance with our customers’ needs. You can help us do this by making your requirements known to us – we reward every inquiry with a highly attractive price level. Put us to the test and you will be delightfully surprised.

Why “green” O-rings?

For many of our customers, it is very important to be able to distinguish FKM O-rings with their unique properties and universal applicability from O-rings made from conventional materials to avoid confusing them during assembly work. Angst + Pfister has decided for pale green RAL 6021 FKM O-rings on

the basis of the following criteria:

- high-grade elastomer with excellent chemical resistance;
- very good mechanical properties;
- easy processability;
- high availability;
- good price-performance ratio

Properties

Color: pale green RAL 6021
Hardness: 70 ± 5 IRHD
Operating temperature: – 20 to + 200 °C
Short-term operating
temperature: + 230 °C
Media resistance: to oils, aliphatic hydrocarbons, low flammability hydraulic fluids, fuels, and numerous chemicals

Elastomers brave the most daunting media

KALREZ® O-rings When safety and reliability of a sealing element stand in the foreground, using original KALREZ® perfluoroelastomer is strongly advisable. Littau, Switzerland-based KINEMATICA AG, a leader in dispersing and mixing technology, is a company that often deals with applications involving aggressive media.

In its products it employs O-rings made of KALREZ® compounds 6375 and 6230 supplied by Angst+Pfister.

KALREZ® O-rings in deployment

The rotor-stator principle of KINEMATICA MEGATRON® dispersing processors is patented. These machines are used to disperse, suspend, homogenize and emulsify fluid-fluid or fluid-solid material blends. The blending process utilizes the throughfeed method and generates temperatures up to +200°C and pressures up to 20 bars. The entrance and exit connections of the processing chamber are dimensioned using KALREZ® O-rings as static flange seals. Inside the blending chamber, all parts in contact with the processed product are also sealed using KALREZ® O-rings.

KALREZ® compounds 6375, 6230 and 6221

Compound 6375 was specifically developed for the chemical industry. This material is the ideal choice for applications involving acids, bases, amines, steam, ethylene oxide and many other aggressive chemicals. The 6230 compound complies with FDA requirements and provides very high resistance to repeated contact with superheated steam. This compound is tailored for use in the chemical, pharmaceutical and food industries. KALREZ® compound 6221 is identical to compound 6230, but is not carbon-black-filled and thus has a white color.

KALREZ® ensures high reliability

High performance and reliability are the strong points of KINEMATICA’s MEGATRON® dispersing processors, which meet users’ highest demands and requirements. The same high demands are placed on the sealing elements used in the machines. The KALREZ® and HITEC® O-rings employed in these products fulfill the customer’s requirements and seal the dispersing appliances lastingly and efficiently. You too can take advantage of our experience in deploying seals in critical applications.
