The perfect fit between rotating and stationary components

Radial shaft seals and axial shaft seals are gaskets made in elastomer and/or plastic material, with or without metal inserts and energizing springs, to be applied on shafts with relative rotary motion. They are primarily used for drivelines, axles, agriculture machines and construction equipment, compressors and pumps, mixers, robotics, gearmotors and others.

Rotating seals are devices widely utilized to prevent any leakage or any exchange of media (pasty, liquid, and gaseous), to contain the pressure, and to exclude any contamination of dust, moisture, and dirt between two chambers that are subject to a relative either rotating or oscillating motion. But the primary sealing function is only one requisite an effective and reliably performing radial shaft seal needs to fulfill, as other features are essential too.

Application success with material knowledge

Be it either a rubber seal or a plastic seal, choosing the right materials can provide the proper chemical inertia against the media in contact, the correct physical performance against the working temperature and the working pressure, and the necessary tribological properties to withstand high tangential speed and strong abrasion. From NBR to FKM, HNBR, CR, ACM, AEM, PTFE-Polytetrafluoroethylene and Polyurethane – a wide range of elastomer compounds are available at Angst+Pfister for either lubricated or dry working conditions. And according to the application environment, different steel types can be used for the metal inserts and for the springs.

It goes without saying that best solution for your sealing application can be achieved by making use of our highly specialized competence in the area of materials, specifically by optimizing the elastomer compounds, engineering plastic materials and metals used. Together with our engineering know-how for conceiving the most effective rotating seal design, this makes for a recipe for success!

Tackling your problems

Working pressure, tangential speed, dimensional constraints, working temperature, chemical composition of the media to be sealed, efficiency in low drag torque, and long endurance are all conditions that an effective solution needs to satisfy. Angst+Pfister has developed the specific expertise over a century of activities across the different OEM Industries to support you in defining the most suitable sealing solutions.

Angst+Pfister offers a comprehensive range of standard normalized sealing solutions shown in the table below, as well as the possibility of co-designing customized devices to fully meet even the most stringent customer’s requirements for harsh applications. Type HTS II PTFE rotary shaft seal with steel clamping ring on the rear side and self-retightening sealing lip. Design without radial spring with good dry running properties and low friction. Steel clamping ring does not come into contact with the medium. PTFE / Carbon   black -70 to +200 18 <6   x x           x x
Type BSB Diaphragm rotary shaft seal including single lip seal with steel backing ring and support/dust lip for low friction and low wear. Also suitable for repairs as the old running-in track of the first seal is not used and therefore no reworking of the shaft is necessary. FKM 70 Shore A turquoise -30 to +220 40 <15   x x     x     x x
Type SAB   Radial shaft seal with sharply cut or pressed sealing lip and metallic centering ring on the outside diameter. Design without radial spring for lower radial forces. NBR

Cassette Seals   Cassette seals provide a higher protection among the range of the Radial Shaft Seals. By means of a labyrinth with a combination of some radial and axial sealing lips, the sealing performance on both inner and outer diameters produces the perfect and reliable isolation between the lubricant side and the harsh outer environment. The filled-in grease in the cavities of the labyrinth assure a much longer life time and a reduced drag torque. Combination of different materials acc. to application         <0.5 x Version with PTFE lip Version with FKM or PTFE lip only       x   x x
COMBI Seal   COMBI seals integrate an excellent inner oil seal function with a strong outer protection from harsh environment. The use of a different material for the outer seal enhances the protection from the external pollution. Combination of different materials acc. to application         <0.5 x Version with PTFE lip Version with FKM or PTFE lip only     x x x x
Sleeve   The shaft sleeve is a particularly economical solution to prevent wear on shafts and axles by contact seals. Running surfaces already damaged by run-in marks are successfully replaced by Speedy-Sleeve without any problems, within minutes and with simple hand movements. Stainless steel                 x     x
End Cap   The end cap provides a perfect sealing protection for gear devices and gear boxes where the shaft doesn't pass through. Easy to install, it tolerates higher metal surface roughness and provides a radial static sealing with reliable tightness. It reduces the risk of corrosion and it compensates the resulting gap by the differential thermal expansion between the box case and its metal insert.
